asana kit

a yoga teacher app

UX | UI Case study

Asana Kit is the final project of the three month UX | UI bootcamp I did in 2022.

To deepen the knowledge and skills we gained in the lectures all students got the task to design a clickable prototype for an app of self-selected topic.  My capstone project ‚Asana Kit‘ included user research, designing and prototyping during the limited time of three weeks.  As I had to fullfill every steps of the process by myself I organised in a notion Kanban board first to not miss any important tasks.

I chose this topic because I can relate to it: in summer last year I went to Kerala in India to do a basic yoga teacher course and I always find it very hard to structure your class when you are a beginner. As I know quiet a few yoga teachers it was relatively easy to find people for my research – I picked people from different levels to get a diverse view on the main needs and painpoints .

Tools: Figjam, Notion, Google forms, Figma

the idea

Asana Kit is an App for yogateachers to make creating yogaclasses effortless and easy.
It can be used while teaching in classmode and gives you the opportunity to connect to other yogateachers in the community section. Additionaly the App offers a Yogawiki to broaden your knowledge and find backround information for your instructions.

interviews

To understand how most yogateacher prepare for their classes and what kind of obstruction they are facing in the process according to their experience in teaching and practicing yoga interviews with teachers from
totally different  backrounds were made.

survey

25 Yogateachers | from 10 different countries | 30 questions
In addition to the interviews a quantitative research was made as a survey with Google forms to give a wider perspective of the needs and painpoints of yogateachers from different backrounds and experience teaching a variety of style.

Here are the most important results:

survery insights

user personas

Depending on different stages of experience I defined three user personas  to show the different needs, painpoints and frustrations in teaching yoga and to develop the mainfeatures of the App.

key insights from research

After my research I had several key insights what is important for yogateachers when preparing for their classes, during teaching and for networking.

key insights

Out of these insights I develloped 4 main menue items for the first version of the app. I concentrated on the classplanner feature, the other features were not totally out of scope – with regart to teh limited time I decided to show the community part, the wiki section and the class mode only in fewer screens.

main menue

user flow

The user flow is showing the path the user is taking to fullfill the task of creating a completely new yoga class including the Log in process, doing presettings and choosing asanas.

wireframes

Starting with a Low-Fidelity wireframe helping to structure the App and solve the task of how to give propositions for asanas and to be adjustable for different kinds of yogaclasses.

design system

The designsystem including a moodboard, colours, fonts and components was set up in Figma using styles and libraries.
A rather calming, minimalistic design was chosen in order not to distract the user from its tasks and goals – furthermore in order not to lose sight of the main focus to simplify the creation of their yogaclasses.

prototype

Using Figma to design a realistic representation of Asana Kit the prototype helps to understand usability of the App. Connecting 40+ frames using the design system made before result in a clickable prototype

reflection & outlook

After creating the prototype reflecting about the process I am really happy with the outcome. As it is the first App I ever designed as my capstone project and in consideration of the time limit I can say I did not have any major problems during the progress. The biggest challenge in the design process was to be as minimalistic as possible without compromising on functions and features needed. It was a very good experience to go through the whole progress to deepen the knowledge I gained in a very intense three month bootcamp.

To go further in the process the next step would be to send the App into user testing before improving already existing features and to work on features being out of scope during the first phase and on all the ideas coming from the interviewed yogateachers before finally realizing Asana Kit.
